Plantation House Hotel Ermington Devon 2025 20th May 2025
To celebrate our 47th wedding anniversary we decided to have an overnight stay and a nice meal at a hotel. About 3 miles away from where we live in Ivybridge in a little village called Ermington is a small hotel called Plantation House which although we have passed it on a number of occasions have never been inside. It has good reviews so we thought we would try it.
I went on their website to have a look. It only has 8 bedrooms and from the photographs they all were nicely furnished. The restaurant also has good reviews so I booked it. Why travel a great distance when we have what sounds like a lovely small hotel on our doorstep?
We left home just after 3 pm checked in and received a lovely warm welcome from the owner. He showed us to our room (No 21 called Moscow Mule – all bedrooms were named after cocktails). It was at the front of the hotel on the 2nd floor accessed by stairs (no lift). It was large light and airy and nicely decorated and absolutely everything was provided.
The bathroom was also very well appointed with a huge shower a separate bath sink and toilet and all the toiletries that you would need.
In addition to the welcome letter with the pre-order for breakfast there was also an anniversary card (I did mention when I booked that it was our anniversary) which was a nice personal touch.
We had a cup of cafetiere coffee and a piece of homemade cake sat in the comfy chairs in the room looking out from our bedroom window over the surrounding countryside. There was a super hospitality tray with lots of choice and also a basket of fresh fruit.
We then had a G & T sat on the terrace enjoying the afternoon sunshine.
Whilst outside I took a photo of the outside of the hotel – our room (No 21) is on the 2nd floor far right.
The only slight downside at the moment is the road noise. The hotel is situated by the side of an ‘A’ road which does get busy during the day but hopefully should be quieter later on.
After a shower it was time to go down to dinner. We started with pre dinner drinks and nibbles sat in the lounge bar.
We were then taken through to our table in the dining room where we enjoyed a very nice meal.
There was a Chef’s Appetiser and homemade bread. It was Mackerell pate for Steve but as I don’t eat fish I had a venison alternative.
For Starters
Steve had Kashmiri spiced venison ragout, spinach, mango lime pickle, carrot and parsnip crisps
I had Aged serrano ham with soft goats cheese, watermelon and wild honey dressing
For Mains
Steve had Crisp Skinned Devon Duck on an orange cointreau and green peppercorn sauce served with vegetables
I had Roasted Rack of Lamb on a basque style cassoulet with bean paprika chorizo, red pepper and tomato served with vegetables
Dessert
Steve had Chilled Chocolate Souffle Torte with chocolate sauce, strawberries, buttermilk sorbet praline
I had Apricot and Blueberry Creme with Rhubarb Jelly, Red Fruit Sorbet and Shortbread
To finish we had coffee and petit fours sat back in the lounge bar.
We had a reasonable night’s sleep but it was warm in the room but a fan was supplied. However I have to have a bedroom window open (even in the middle of winter). Also although the road was a bit quieter there was some traffic which did disturb my sleep. It did however become quieter as the night went on but come early morning it got very busy again including large lorries thundering past.
21st May
We went down to breakfast and had the full English which was very good.
After packing up we made the short journey home. However when we got in and Steve realised he still had the room key in his pocket so he had to jump back in the car to return it. Good job it was only 3 Miles away!
A very nice stay, the only one slight negative was the road noise, although the countryside views would be lost a room at the back of the hotel would have been quieter.
