Puppy Class Attended for The Hearing Dogs For Deaf People

A new Trainer has recently been appointed to take over the Plymouth Area of puppy socialisers for the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People Charity to which I am a volunteer, and although we have communicated by email, it was suggested that it would be nice to meet up and an ideal place to do this would be at one of the puppy training classes. It would also give me a chance to meet the puppies in the area, that I might be called upon to board for short periods of time or longer holiday cover for their socialisers. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People – Jamie Came to Stay

Well it has been a bit quiet on the dog front lately, apart from Henry (my neighbours dog) of course, who I have the pleasure of walking twice a week, but on Friday 20th January 2012, little Jamie arrived He was a 15 week old black Labrador puppy. I was asked if I would have him for the weekend for the Hearing Dogs For Deaf People, to which I am a volunteer. Jamie’s socialisers were going away for the weekend and needed someone to look after him. Little Jamie arrived early Friday evening complete with his food, cage, blankets, toys, bones, plastic milk bottle (which is a great help for him to chew on, with his very very sharp milk teeth). Piper The Labrador Hearing Dog Puppy

Piper The Labrador Hearing Dog Puppy arrived on 22nd February and he was absolutely adorable.

He was extremely well behaved and settled in very quickly.

We had some lovely walks with him and he loved his walks on Dartmoor which is walking distance from our house. There is also a lovely wooded walk by the River Erme in Ivybridge and as Piper loved any sort of water, he had plenty of time in the water.

We took him to our local beach at Mothecombe where again he loved going into the sea and playing in the sand.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People Volunteer

Once I handed back Rolfe (the police dog puppy that I puppy walked) please read the pages relating to this, as I am sure that you will find it very interesting – but get the hankies ready for the end bit!!!). I felt the need for another dog, but did not want to be tied for the next 10 or so years with my own dog.

I saw an advertisement in my local paper for the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People Charity asking for volunteers to be a to be a puppy socialiser. I read all about the charity and seeing it was very similar (although very different) to the police puppy walking scheme, I decided that I would apply, as it was something that I would like to do again.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People

This is a national charity and centre of excellence in training hearing dogs to alert deaf people to everyday household sounds and danger signals in the home, work place and in public buildings.

Hearing Dog Training

The Charity trains hearing dogs to alert deaf people to important household sounds and danger signals such as the alarm clock, doorbell, telephone and smoke alarm – providing independence, confidence and security, as well as valuable companionship.
